I was born in 1973 in Wisconsin where my interest in photography began in the early 1980’s with my first camera, a used Kodak pocket instamatic given to me by my grandmother. Many years and cameras later, I ventured to the state of Washington to finish my Bachelor of Science in Botany followed by mycology and lichenology work throughout the mountains and forests of the Northwestern United States.
In 2003 I visited Southeast Asia for the first time and I was immediately captivated by the region’s culture, ecosystems and social issues. This led me to complete a Master of Arts in International Sustainable Development in Chiang Mai, Thailand.
Currently my photography focuses on many subjects, but I have a keen interest in the images of day-to-day life – the scenes often overlooked because of their seeming monotony or commonality. The beauty of these images is that one person’s sense of “routine” or “ordinary” can easily represent another person’s “exotic”. Static social imagery of everyday life has an unmatched ability to contextualize culture and it guides us to consciously reflect upon our daily choices, interactions, rituals and livelihoods.
